High Highs: Santa Lucia Highlands 2023
Nestled into a narrow, 18-mile stretch to the south of Monterey Bay, the Santa Lucia Highlands is one of the most consistent and consistently under-the-radar winegrowing regions in the United States. A long, even-tempered growing season in 2023 blessed winemakers with the opportunity to ascend to astonishing heights. And ascend they did.

Updated - Napa Valley’s 2022 & 2023 Cabernet Sauvignons
Napa Valley is very clearly at an inflection point of tremendous change on many levels. Shifting consumer preferences, vintages with markedly different and at times challenging conditions, and an evolving market are all topics that are front and center in any discussion of Napa Valley today. “May you live in interesting times,” the ancient proverb says. These are definitely interesting times. My annual report covers the bottled 2022 Cabernet Sauvignons and the nascent 2023s from barrel.

Updated - Sonoma and Neighbors 2022 & 2023: Opposites Attract
Updated: July 3, 2025. It’s that time of year. New releases from Sonoma County and neighboring appellations are starting to hit the market. This report covers some of the most exciting wines I tasted on my recent trip to Sonoma. As is our custom, we will post frequent updates to this article in the coming weeks, which we feel is the best way to keep readers current, given the sheer volume of wines released this time of year. Readers can also look forward to a forthcoming report focused on the Moon Mountain AVA, where the wines are quite distinct from those made in the more central regions within Sonoma County.

Vinous Table: Plates, London, UK
Plates is one of my finest meals in recent months. Beyond satiating the senses, it made me reflect on food. Some of the dishes are indelibly printed on my memory. I find myself reliving them, mouthful by mouthful. And you know what? Plates is vegan.

Vinous Table: Marea, New York, USA
It’s hard to get to the top, but it’s even harder to stay there. Sixteen years after it opened in 2009, Marea remains one of New York City’s most vital food and wine destinations. Judging by packed rooms on several recent visits, that’s a view shared by many. Food, wine and service are as exceptional as they have ever been, something that was evident on the three recent dinners that inform this article.

90 points ($25)
2023 J. Lohr Chardonnay Arroyo Vista
The 2023 Chardonnay Arroyo Vista has a tropical nose of ripe mango, peach and toasty vanilla. It’s forward in style but the oak is well integrated, balanced by cooling acids and persistent grip. For a wine at this scale of production, there’s a good bit of nuance and a long, bright finish. (BN)

93 points ($20)
2024 De Martino Caménère Ungrafted
Sourced from Isla de Maipo, the 2024 Carménère Ungrafted offers distinctive raspberry and fresh sour cherry fruit. It avoids the typical pyrazinic edge, leaning instead toward a lifted, minty edge. The dry and juicy 2024 flows easily across the palate with clarity and freshness. (JH)

90 points ($25)
2023 Querciabella Mongrana
The 2023 Mongrana is an absolute delight. Plump, juicy and expressive, the 2023 has so much to offer. Ripe cherry, plum, cinnamon, cedar and new leather are nicely amplified in this tasty Sangiovese, Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon-based Maremma red. Best of all, the 2023 is a screaming value. (AG)

Cellar Favorite: 1990 Guy de Barjac Cornas
Stick me on a desert island with a choice of one Rhône wine, and I would choose Cornas. I love this appellation, especially when a mature bottle crops up.

Cellar Favorite: 1952 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti Grand Cru
1952 was a significant vintage: it marked the return of the Romanée-Conti cuvée after the monopole’s ungrafted vines were pulled out following the 1945 harvest. It was a complete privilege to drink this extraordinarily rare piece of history.
